Rail line under central Brisbane, Australia

Cross River Rail is a new 10.2km rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, which includes 5.9km of tunnel under the Brisbane River and the Central Business District.

Project Overview
  • The project delivered four new underground stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, and Roma Street, with upgrades to Dutton Park and Exhibition stations.
  • An engineering firm commissioned Sixense Satellite to provide a remote InSAR monitoring system to support activities related to the Cross River Rail project in central Brisbane. The large size/wide coverage of SAR images made it possible to later extend the monitoring scope to include the main underground alignment of the Cross River Rail tunnels, as well as the Albert Street, Roma Street, and Woolloongabba stations.

InSAR Monitoring Solution & Deliverables

  • An Atlas InSAR historical study covering a six-year period from 2012 to 2018 successfully demonstrated that Atlas InSAR is a highly cost-effective and reliable tool for understanding historical ground motion, supporting the design phase of underground transport infrastructure in dense urban environments.
  • The baseline analysis was derived from 50 high-resolution X-band images, generating up to 130,000 measurement points.
  • Results were delivered through the Beyond Satellite web-based platform, which enables the integration of Atlas InSAR data with traditional ground deformation monitoring techniques.
